Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to contest certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
