Our Leading Release of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Position.

At first glance, Lux might appear more like an arduous scholarly examination rather than the latest pop album by a musician whose previous single was a collaboration with an international pop star. Split across 4 separate parts and performed in thirteen tongues, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged work investigating female mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently via the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is shot heavenward here, supported by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself makes the work of other artists appear rather small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in transcend overly academic chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, and complete credit going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to fuse historical sounds and the present, its scale are much higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. What really raises her fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of fun. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts in two, the listener still want to be right there through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy comes forth brightly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, and there's a gleeful laugh and a declaration before a comically over-the-top string crescendo thuds down with comedic force. The song immediately shifts into the wild track driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic of Lux is that you never exactly understand—nor wish to predict—what it will go next."

Almost each track ends in a totally distinct place than how it started. A track explores the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in electronic chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's previous rhythmic style starts out moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves navigating the gap of radical experimentation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that it has become her first work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of utterly catchy hits. One track sung primarily in English builds around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. This feat gets repeated on a different expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the pop culture impact of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album is popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden gems that takes time to completely mine but doesn't feels like a chore. While other major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast where the guests at the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
